Castle Lietava

Castle Lietava - Kinižiho arms.

LIETAVA CASTLE

This castle is situated on steep rock hill named Cibulník, 635m over the sea between villages Lietava and Lietavská Svinná. This castle is the second largest castle in Slovakia and in its times it was considered as an impregnable castle.  It was built after 1241 as administrative and military residence.  This castle was also named as White castle and it had many owners: king Žigmund, Pavol from Kiniža, family Zápoľský, Mikuláš Kostka the czech noble, Sadzivoj the noble from Poland and family Thurzo.

In 16th century Mikuláš Kostka made several constructions on the castle. One document from 1698 is saying that the castle wasn´t occupied. There was only an archive. When Imrich Thurzo died, the castle was divided between inheritors and they together looked after the castle for some time. In half of 18th century the castle stayed alone and nobody cared about it.

Walls of this castle are still standing now and there is very beautiful view from this ruin. This large fortress of the Middle ages had very important role in the history of north-west Slovakia. 35 villages belonged to this castle. The first famous owner was Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. After year 1770 the castle wasn´t occupied and started to vandalize.

You can get here from Rajecké Teplice and it takes 2,5 hours.
